Who Are The Best Sports Teams In Winnipeg?

Winnipeg is the capital city of Manitoba, Canada. It has a population of around 700,000 residents within the city and it stretches for more than 464 square kilometers. Winnipeg is home to many important landmarks, historical buildings, and even a few famous people. But it’s the sports teams in Winnipeg that really bring the crowds.

Winnipeg is a proud city and they have several well-known sports teams spread across a number of different sports. The people of Winnipeg love to band together and support their favorite teams at sporting events throughout the year. Here are a few of the top Winnipeg sports teams competing this year.

1. Winnipeg Blue Bombers

The Blue Bombers were founded in 1930 and serve as the Winnipeg professional football team. They compete annually in the Canadian Football League within the West division. Home games for the Blue Bombers are played at the new IG Field, which opened in 2013. The IG field also hosts the local women’s and junior’s football teams.

The Blue Bombers are a unique team that refuses to conform to some more modern ideals seen in professional sports today. For example, they are the only team in the CFL without shareholders. The team is considered a corporation without share capital. No single person owns the Blue Bombers and this allows them more freedom when it comes to developing a hard-hitting roster.

The team started strong but eventually entered a 29-year drought without a championship. It wasn’t until 2013 that the team receive Mike O’Shea as a head coach, made a few trades, and went on to win their 11th championship. Today, they are considered one of the best football teams in the CFL.

2. Winnipeg Goldeyes

Baseball has always been a huge part of Winnipeg culture. The Winnipeg Maroons won 8 championships between 1902 and 1942 as part of the original Northern League. In 1994, the Goldeyes were founded and in 2011 they left the Northern League to become part of the American Association of Independent Professional Baseball.

The Goldeyes have consistently won championships from their very first year in the Northern League. In the American Association, they have won three titles so far. Two of them were won back-to-back in the years 2016 and 2017.

The team calls Shaw park home, as do local minor league teams. Shaw Park isn’t as new as the IG Field, but it still looks amazing and it still pulls a huge crowd. It can fit more than 7,000 fans, features a total of 30 sky suites, and even has its own Indian restaurant that’s almost as famous as the baseball team.

Honorable Mentions

The Goldeyes and Blue Bombers might dominate when it comes to baseball and football, but that’s hardly all that Winnipeg has to offer. Some of their other notable sports teams include the Valour FC and the Winnipeg Jets. The Jets are recognized as one of the best hockey teams in Canada while the Valour FC continues to make a name in Soccer. Winnipeg may have beautiful scenery and historic buildings but its the sports team and their fans that really make the city stand out.
